Monitor Cooler

Description

CRT monitors use a lot of power and produce a lot of heat. If possible you should place them so they have good air flow, otherwise the heat won't dissipate, which is not very good for the monitor. So what to do if the monitor has to stand in an unfavorable place? Sure, you need active cooling!
In this example a fatass 22" monitor is placed under a shelf. It produces an assload of heat which gets stuck under the shelf. The shelf itself gets pretty hot. To counter the heat a 92mm fan blows fresh air between the monitor and the shelf. Thus the shelf stays cool and also the monitor gets less hot than without the fan.
The power comes directly from the computer's PSU by tapping a 12V or 5V wire. It's recommended to use a big, slowly rotating fan because it is more quiet than a small, fast fan.

monitorcooler1.jpgThe cheapass fan (3.95 at Conrad) was hanged under the shelf and blows the rising hot air away from the monitor. It's not good to attach it to the monitor because you'd have to drill holes into the case to get a decent air flow. You further lose your warranty if it's a newer monitor.
monitorcooler2.jpgThe same thing, but from the left. The fan is not hanged straight so it can ventilate a bigger area.
monitorcooler3.jpgThis fat switch toggles the fan, you might want to disable it if you just turn off the monitor and not the PC.
