Description
Redmen built this cooling system because his desktop Celeron 700MHz notebook always overheated if the PCMCIA network card was plugged in. This cooling system is just an aluminum frame the notebook is placed on top of so it gets more fresh air. To cool the environment of the PCMCIA slots Redmen added a small fan to the frame which is connected to a USB port. There is enough distance between the frame and the fan so a notebook of any size can be used. |
The side of the frame. The 40mm fan is mounted to cool the PCMCIA slots from the side. The power connector is a modded SmartKey (came with an MSI board).
The frame on top. It is made of aluminum, the fan bracket too. This makes the frame light and stable.
The laptop cooler on operation. The higher position makes the heat dissipate better. Too bad it's not very economic because the notebook isn't very stable on the frame. The fan can be turned off with a soldered switch if necessary.
The fan is mounted so it doesn't cover the PCMCIA slots completely. There's enough space for the card's connectors, for example the network cable.
The fan is running! It is throttled because it is designed for 12V but the USB port delivers only 5V. It's still powerful enough to do some cooling. The USB port is the best solution for notebook because there is no 12V connector.
