Introduction
This project was started to display the VGA image of the computer on the TV. We won't explain here how the conversion works, instead we'll show you which ghetto mods it lead to.
You can find more information at http://www.hut.fi/Misc/Electronics/circuits/vga2tv/
Why would you want to convert the VGA signal?
Advantages: |
If you try to watch a movie on you computer monitor you might think: "This sucks!"
Wouldn't it be better to watch it on your TV??? But what about those TV stations which create some kind of "interference" to scramble the picture? The only solution is a TV card in the computer, that's why this project exists.
The same goes for DVDs that are played by software (without hardware MPEG decoder)! |
Disadvantages: |
The resolution is limited at 640x480 (NTSC) or 800x600 (PAL) at a maximum of 50 or 60 Hz. |
|
| An overview of the stuff we used for the first VGA-2-TV converter! |
| We used the Mitac486 here because the first "driver" supported DOS only. |
| A closeup view of the first circuit using a cheap HSYNC/VSYNC mod which consisted of only one 74LS08 and a resistor! |
| The picture wouldn't be stable because of the cheap AND link of the sync. H and V sync is separate on VGA but not on scart! |
| The picture was distorted, too. |
| The soldered side of the Matrox-VGA PCB which doesn't have those sync errors but it also needs more parts, a 74LS86 (XOR), 2 transistors and several resistors and additionally a 5V voltage regulator. |
| The other side of the PCB. |
| 1:1 extension of the link cable. |
| The placement of the monitor allows viewing from the bed. Check out the bent table!! |
| This is the audio amplifier (which is ghetto, too) which can either be used with the modded cardboard speakers (PC speakers) or with the hifi. It has 3 Components: Power supply (2x 6V/3A), equalizer and the actual amplifier. |
