Description
Here, you'll learn how to turn a harmless milk can into a badass explosive. We were able to see on of those things in action during the August 1 celebrations, the shock wave thrills your guts nicely. The bang is so loud you can hear it a few kilometers away.
The cannon is fired in a classic way, with a torch. You'll feel like a pirate...ARRR!
It works quite easy: Mix some water and carbide in the can so it produces gas, then close the can. After that the gas is ignited through the hole in the bottom of the can. It explodes and blasts the top cover away. BOOM!
Parts for a torch
- Broomstick 1.5 m
- Steel wire
- Cloth (you can use old stinking socks, too)
- Lamp oil or spirit
Parts for the cannon
- Aluminum milk can
- 20-30 m of rope
- Carbide (might be available in drugstores)
- Water
Step 1: We build a torch
- Wrap the cloth around one end of the broomstick.
- Fasten the cloth with wire.
- Saturate the cloth with oil or spirit.
- Finished!
Step 2: Prepare the cannon
- Clean the milk can.
- Drill a hole of approx. 5 mm in diameter into the bottom of the milk can. Later, the cannon will be ignited through this hole.
- Take 20-30 m of rope (a light one if possible) and tie the top cover to one of the handles. Otherwise the top cover will fly away and get lost after the explosion.
- Now the cannon is ready to be loaded.
Step 3: Loading the cannon
It's best to make two persons load the cannon, it's easier than alone.
- Open the can and hold it aslope.
- Put a few spoons of carbide in the can. Note: You'll have to experiment a bit to find the right amount but a few spoons should be enough usually.
- Pour water in the can until the carbide starts to dissolve. Don't breathe the gas!
- Close the top cover and shake the can to mix water and carbide.
- The can's inside will be filled with gas, it can be ignited now.
- Keep the hole closed until you ignite the cannon or the gas might evaporate.
Step 4: Fire!!!
- Lay the can on the ground and make sure there are no obstacles.
- Put on ear protection! The explosion causes a shock wave that might be bad for your ears.
- Light the torch and stand aside the can. Make sure nobody stands in front or behind the can!
- Hold the burning torch close to the hole. There should be a massive bang now!
