Description
A server case which has enough room for many harddisks usually costs a lot of money. If you have some modding skills you can transform a standard big-tower case into a file server case for only little money.
In this case it's a server based on a Pentium III mainboard which has to bear up to 12 harddisks (more than 1 TB total) to store data and websites.
In principle, this project shouldn't be on this website because it is way too professional.
|
Everything began with these two sheets of aluminum. They were intended for the harddisk frame.
The aluminum sheets were bent professionally to guarantee the stability. The holes for the harddisks were precise, too.
To keep the harddisks from going up in smoke, a few 92mm fans were required.
The harddisk frame was to be affixed to a rail at the bottom of the case so the harddisks can be added or removed easily.
Cutouts for two additional power supplies were made into the rear side of the case, those power supplies will feed the harddisks.
The harddisk frame, already mounted on the rail.
To display the voltage supply and to control the fans, a front panel with LEDs and switches was made. The wires were bundled for a clean look.
The harddisk tower is almost finished. Only the extra power supplies and the computer components are still missing.
During the modification of the case, the server had to be operated "naked" to prevent downtime.
All components have been assembled. Currently, 8 of max. 12 harddisks are built in, so there's only one extra power supply. The wires are long enough so the frame can be taken out.
The new file server installed in the server rack, together with the other servers.
The server with the harddisk frame taken out
