The story of Schwizi's Audi
You won't believe it, but I've got a new car again. I wanted a decent car after that Italian
crap, it had to be a German brand. More precisely, an Audi 80. Ok, I was lucky to get such a
car at all: My Audi was born in 1985. It was driven by its first owner for 4 years, later, a
garage owner bought it and always kept it in good shape. His daughter drove it as well, and
in January 2003 I got it because the daughter would have dumped it anyway. If there's a car
that is just worth nothing, I'm right there! So I picked it up with some friends, it was
free of course. It was fun to drive the Audi, it served me well (with no breakdown!) for 2
years. This is incredible, and so is the fact that I've driven the same car for such a long
time! Also keep the car's age in mind: It was 20 years old!
The action started one week after picking it up: I drove it to Adelboden. I could drive it
up into the mountains in one attempt. On the last day I parked and noticed that the left
light was on. Oh my god, why?? Thanks to the ghetto-Alfa I didn't know a car could be
equipped with electronic features, at least not a car built in 1985! Fact was, if the turn
signal was still on while parking, the corresponding light stayed on. That was pretty cool!
The Audi still worked without a glitch...
One day, in spring 2004, I crashed backwards into the stairs of the ZicZac in Allschwil,
which made the rear mudguard break off. That didn't matter, though, the Audi wasn't
broken.
One special thing on my power Audi was the choke, the thing you have to pull if you want to start your car, especially if it's cold. The engineer must have fucked up the whole design of the ignition, always having to use the choke was a pain. There was still an advantage: No car thief would think of using the choke to start the car, so it was a good protection. Ok, it would have to be a noob anyway to steal a 1985 Audi 80 with 72 HP. Let me tell you: The Audi engineer must have been a FUCKING NOOB because he didn't give the Audi more HP!! (Luckily, that changed with the RS4/6 hehe).
The choke was also useful in traffic jams: I didn't have to use the gas pedal (I was used to a "binary" gas pedal), I could just vary the choke position to reach 10 km/h!
Due to lack of money, I always used the same tires, they were winter tires. It's obvious that they won't make 30'000 km in 2 years, especially if they are used in summer, too. This resulted in a reduction of the profile to 200µm. I was still lucky when I was pulled over by the cops in 2004, the profile was still more than 0.6mm or the cop didn't care.
My Audi wasn't easy for the co-driver. If you tried to open the right door the lock got often blocked so someone had to open it from outside.
I didn't care about all that, the car was free for god's sake! And this is already the end of the adventure with my Audi 80. I'm an engineer now, and I'm not sure what kind of car I'll buy with my fat wages. Insiders believe that it won't be a ghetto car (3 are enough) but a BMW M3 (not sure who would tune it). To be continued...
