Description
To provide the necessary services for web hosting Habster (our web hoster) needed a few servers. At the beginning this network was spreaded loosely across the room but this wasn't a long-time solution. A real server rack had to be built...
|
| This is what the "server rack" looked like before the mod. The servers were just standing on the floor, which resulted in wasted space and messy wiring. |
| Time to build a real rack!
Only little material was needed: A storage shelf made of metal was to act as the actual rack, a strong wooden frame with rollers made it more flexible.
The wooden frame was already cut and bolted together on this picture. |
| Habster assembling the rack...
You can see clearly that the shelf wasn't cheap but it was worth every buck because it is damn massive. |
| The shelf was originally meant to be placed on the ground. This is why the wooden frame had to be strong enough to support the whole weight on the four corners. The rollers were mounted with four thick screws each, the shelf was protected against shifting with four smaller screws. The wooden bars in the middle are extremely important because otherwise the rollers would be bent down. |
| This is the finished server rack. It bears four servers (router, web server, mail server and backup server). They are all protected against power outages using small UPSes (they've already proven to be useful). The rack has been recently improved with a KVM switch and a monitor. |
| Still a lot of wires, at least they could be tidied up a little. |
