Description
To finally make the internet connection available for all people in our house I installed a WLAN (it wasn't possible to lay cables in the cable ducts due to congestion).
I bought these cards: 3Com 11a/b/g Wireless PCI Adapter
According to the specs the card needs a 3.3V slot. I was sure PCI 2.1 and higher support 3.3V signaling but I didn't know 3.3V supply wasn't mandatory.
When testing the card in my mom's Asus P2B i was upset: The screen was black and the mainboard didn't even boot. After some looking for specs and measuring voltages at the slot (Thanks to Matthias who had an appropriate board) I concluded that Asus indeed passed on the 3.3V supply, all 3.3V pins were not connected.
So what to do in such a situation? Be upset? Sure! Solder a few wires together and get the missing voltages from somewhere else? WAY TO GO! |
| The 3.3V were taken from the ATX connector. |
| A bunch of green wires delivers 3.3V to various pins on the WLAN card. |
| Needless to say cheap adhesive tape was used instead of heat shrink tubing. |
