Description
Back in 1996 when we couldn't afford modern computers we had to make the most of our good old CPC6128. This mod was our first attempt to control an external device with the CPC. We didn't know much about the parallel port so !mURx had the idea to use sound as control signals. We used a CPC, a HiFi system and a relay circuit. The red lightbulb BINI (his name is BINI actually, and he knows only two states: bright and dark)* was connected to it. This made a simple 1-channel interface. The stereo output of the CPC was connected to the HiFi's input and the HiFi's speaker output was connected to the relay. The speakers were removed because it was necessary to crank up the volume to the max to get a sufficient output level. The CPC was running a program which lit BINI during predefined intervals.
* BINI ist a cheap comic character from the book "Wolfgang Wahner: BASIC Programmieren lernen mit System", he illustrates a few sample programs there and looks pretty stupid. |
| Since when does a lightbulb have a face?...
The interface also functioned as a sort of PWM that could be used to regulate a desk fan. It was ghetto but it worked. |
| Even the nasty Evil BINI got his turn... |
| The sound interface's circuitry is quite simple...
